The National Flood Mitigation & FloodProofing Workshop

August 14-17. 2017

Workshop Overview

Flooding is the nation's #1 hazard. Add to that a lot of infrastructure and development that is either at moderate or high risk of flooding. How do we mitigate against this flood risk? How do we make sure what is being developed now isn't at risk in the future.

The National Flood Mitigation and FloodProofing Workshop focuses on these questions and in the workshop you will learn tools and techniques that floodplain managers, emergency mangers, property owners, and others can use to reduce flood risk. We will highlight the latest in mitigation and floodproofing techniques (elevation, acquisition wet and dry floodproofing, codes and regulations, easements, warning systems, etc.), products, success stories, funding programs and funding application processes and much more! Tuesday and Thursday feature plenary sessions, mini-workshops and break-out concurrent track sessions offering detailed presentations on engineered mitigation and flood-proofing projects, policy, grant funding, natural and beneficial uses including stream restoration, mitigation planning and outreach. In keeping with our past, all attendees will participate in our Wednesday field tours to see these techniques being applied in the field. 

Are you a State Hazard Mitigation Officer (SHMO) staffer of a state mitigation program? You get your own day including an offering of the SHMO 101 course which will be taught by current SHMOs. Other attendees have the option to attend half-day training workshops. Finally, exhibitors will showcase the state-of-the-art in materials, services, equipment, accessories and techniques early in the week. Plenty of time is planned for attendees to exchange ideas and view the exhibits, so opportunities to network will be ample, as they are at all ASFPM-sponsored events.


Technical Field Tours

Wednesday offers two technical field tours, which have become an integral part of this workshop. The field tours will run all day and no other conference functions will take place at this time so that all workshop attendees may participate.


The Location: New Jersey 


The Hotel

The workshop takes place at the Renaissance Woodbridge Hotel, 515 US Hwy 1 South, Iselin, NJ 08830. The AAA Diamond property is located in a vibrant setting with numerous restaurants and shopping options nearby. The hotel is a 30 minute drive from Newark International Airport. The hotel provides shuttle transportation to Metro Park Train Station which connects to Amtrak and NJ Transit trains to and from Philadelphia, Newark Airport and New York Penn Station. 

The current per diem rate for government employees is $110, plus tax. A limited number of per diem rooms are available. Group rate rooms are available at a negotiated rate of $179 plus tax.

Please note that ASFPM will be periodically reviewing the reservation lists to ensure only current government employees are booked within the per diem block. ASFPM reserves the right to transfer non-governmental employees to the standard group block.

Sponsorship and Exhibitor Opportunities 

We are proud of the variety of exhibitors and program sponsors that the first six workshops have attracted. We have four levels of sponsorship to fit every budget. Ample space is available at the facility, and plenty of time has been built in to the schedule for attendees to visit with exhibitors and sponsors and network with colleagues and new friends. All breaks will be located in the exhibit area to maximize exposure. A new feature in 2017 is the Sponsor and Exhibitor Cracker Barrel where vendor tables will be visited in 15 minute increments, allowing vendors time to answer questions and discuss their services. 

Exhibitor Schedule:
Monday, August 14: 2:00 to 6:00 Exhibitor Set Up
Tuesday, August 15: all day, breaks and 5:00 Networking Social and Cracker Barrel 
Thursday August 17: morning, exhibitor option

Exhibitor Specs: All booth spaces are 10x10 feet and include 6' table, 2 chairs and waste basket. Space is assigned in the order applications are received at the discretion of the workshop directors. Security is provided during hours the exhibits are closed. Exhibitors receive a hard copy list of registrants' names and addresses.

Continuing Education Credits

Participation in the full workshop earns 12 Continuing Education Credits (CECs) for Certified Floodplain Managers (CFMs). Training opportunities taken a la carte qualify for CECs on the basis of 1 credit per hour of instruction, up to the earning limit of 12 credits. You do NOT need to submit your CECs to ASFPM for this workshop as they will automatically be added to your Certification record.

All other professional continuing education needs should be submitted to the appropriate governing body for approval and acceptance.

ASFPM does not automatically provide a certificate of attendance to all workshop participants. If you need a certificate, please contact Anita Larson following the completion of the workshop.
