The Science, Business, and Education of Sustainable Infrastructure: Building Resilience in a Changing World
Location:  Washington, DC

HOST
National Council for Science & the Environment (NCSE)

LOCATION
Washington, DC

DETAILS
Sustainable development is a decades-old concept based on the goal of creating an economy that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs. Today, sustainable infrastructure applies this systems thinking to create infrastructure that meets current needs and anticipates the needs of future generations to support growth and prosperity, including access for all in a changing world.

Sound public policy choices guiding the science, education and training, engineering, planning, and lifecycle management required to create these new infrastructure systems can transform the way people interact with and impact the environment.

Sustainable Infrastructure refers to:
  • Natural Infrastructure provides ecological services such as clean air, water, biodiversity, food, and fiber
  • Built Infrastructure enables transportation, housing, energy, and communications services
  • Cyberinfrastructure supports the data, technology, and transmission to technological advancements and provides technical capacity
  • Social Infrastructure enables education, research, and other human services
