This course is designed to offer exposure to some of the more complicated nuances of Substantial Improvement and Damage requirements found in the National Flood Insurance Program, the Florida Building Code, and local Flood Damage Prevention Ordinances. To open the workshop, and to prepare the attendees for a more in-depth discussion of the issues, a basic foundation of the NFIP, its structure, administration, and benefits will be presented. Additionally, basic components of the concept of SI/SD will be presented. The course will then move directly into FEMA’s Substantial Improvement/Substantial Damage Desk Reference and discussion will be drawn directly from the Manual.
Once the course is completed, local officials (and others) will have a better understanding of the concept of Substantial Improvement/ Substantial Damage, how to solicit data, process applications, and apply the standards of SI/SD, as well as how to interact with State & FEMA with regard to any compliance issues that may arise.
