The National Disaster Preparedness Training Center will be hosting three workshops at ASFPM's national conference. Course expenses are being covered by NDPTC to allow attendees to participate at no cost. Registration is limited and required. Click here to register.

Social Media for Natural Disaster Response and Recovery (PER-304)

MAY 31, 2015 (9 a.m.–5 p.m.)

Instructors: Amanda Ball and Kevin Sur, Natural Disaster Preparedness Training Center

This course focuses on the use of social media in disaster preparedness, response, and recovery. Social media has shown to help people communicate and collaborate about events as the events unfold. Social media can provide rapid and immediate real-time information about events that helps provide greater situational awareness leading to better decision making. Participants are provided with the knowledge and skills to integrate social media into their current communication plans. The course defines social media and its uses and identifies the tools, methods, and models to properly make use of social media in the context of disaster management and provides the information and hands-on experience necessary to help the participants' social media disaster plans. Please note: this workshop requires that registrants bring a laptop computer with ability to access the Internet as well as Facebook, Twitter, and other social media sites.

Coastal Community Resilience (AWR-228C)

JUNE 1, 2015 (8 a.m.-noon)

Instructor: Allison Hardin, CFM, Natural Disaster Preparedness Training Center

This four-hour course provides a broad overview of Coastal Community Resilience and introduces resilience concepts, including the community structure, hazard event life cycle, and benefits of resilience efforts. The course provides information regarding how CCR can help communities prepare and rebound from hazardous events and describes risks associated with natural hazards. The course will also share how to plan for Coastal Community Resilience and outline some strategies for integrating CCR into existing plans and programs.

Hurricane Awareness

JUNE 5, 2015 (8 a.m.-noon)

Instructors: Natural Disaster Preparedness Training Center personnel

This course provides participants with a basic understanding of hurricane science, forecasting, warning, and preparedness. Topics will include: conditions of tropical cyclone formation, prediction of track/intensity, official watch/warning definitions, and recommendations to prepare for associated hazards (e.g., high winds, heavy rain, and storm surge).
